2016 Dragon's Back Chardonnay
Racing with minerality
Black Knight Vineyard has so many microclimates with no two offering the same soil, elevation, or facing. The Dragon’s Back is the nickname of block P7 which runs along the spine of the Roger’s Creek fault. The ground is littered with softball-sized volcanic rocks. This part of the vineyard is forced to persevere with less water, harsher soil, and no wind breaks. The results are glorious. The Chardonnay off this block is extremely mineral driven with nice acidity and an ample amount of tree fruit, such as quince and green apple. We made the decision to go light on the oak and used neutral French for the entire lot. The wine was left on the lees for its entire stay in barrel for 14 months.
