2015 Hoppe Kelly Syrah
Rich, dark and brambly
Sitting just outside of Healdsburg, the rows of the vineyard wrap around the hillside so each row gets both early east and late west facing sun. Having worked with syrah since 2008, I had never seen a harvest in September with mid to late October being the average date for a pick. In 2015, harvest was August 31st! Even though the pick was early, the long warm days aided in a perfect ripeness. The resulting wine has both the brambly quality of a warm climate syrah and the beautiful acidity of cool climate Rhone wine. The once used French oak gives just enough vanilla and char to enhance the brooding dark qualities of the wine without overpowering the cherry, blackberry and cola flavors. Aged 18 months in once used French oak.
