The 2015 Chardonnay Silver and Gold offers pronounced pineapple, mango and ripe apricot notes with touches of brioche, cedar, cashews and honeycomb. Light to medium-bodied, the weight is relatively light, but the flavors are seriously intense here, offering tropical and savory layers that are supported with a racy acid line, finishing long and toasty.

This picturesque 100 acre property lies just outside of Santa Rosa and is one of the most geologically interesting vineyards in all of Sonoma. One half of the vineyard sits above the Rodgers Creek fault and the other half below, separated by nearly a 100 ft vertical drop. Cool mornings and fog soaked sections of the vineyard pushed the chardonnay harvest to September 25th, almost a full month after the reds were picked and one of the last chardonnay picks in all of Sonoma. This extra hang time allowed the flavors to mature while leaving the core acidity that will allow this wine to age. The Silver and Gold Chardonnay is pulled from several different pockets and clones from around the vineyard. The wine’s namesake comes from vineyard owner Mitch Black’s two rescued Labradors, one being silver in color and the other gold, who both enthusiastically greet all visitors to the vineyard. The crisp green apple notes were a perfect pairing for tight-grained oak. With only one barrel made, Ed and I decided to use one new Taransaud barrel. The wine was left on the lees for its entire stay in barrel for 14 months.
